Funny what you find surfing the web. I remember Father Manion quite well. Also the others that you mentioned, and I do believe I also remember you. Whitel not a Camelite, my Dad, Joseph O'Boyle was also very instrumental in bringing the Chapel to Northshore. I was at the dedication and was introduced to Cardinal Cushing. My mother, Marion, was also a big supporter of the Chapel. It is heartwarming to see such a nice posting.

I was at Niagara from 9/55 thru 6/57; was Hamilton class of 59. I left in November of 63. I wrote a book for my children about my Carmelite experience. I believe Bob Colaresi has a copy.

My years in Carmel left a permanent and overwhelmingly positive imprint on me. I am grateful beyond words.

For many years, I have tried to encourage the province to facilitate a get-together -- face-to-face, not electronically -- when/where O.Carms and X.Carms could gather and share the wisdoms of our various life journeys ... and to just share our fellowship. One of my friends who had been a priest in another community has that opportunity every two years and it is organized by his previous community; he relishes that get-together. And I know that many other communities of religious men and religious women do the same.

Well, this effort by Sal Lema might prove to be the leaven for such a gathering in the future. I applaud Sal for what I believe to be a step in the right direction.

As many of you know, every few years there is a gathering of X.Carms at the retreat house in Darien, Illinois. In some years it is much better attended than in others. The next one is to be October 1-3, 2010. Hopefully, it will be well-attended. After all, as we all age [and not necessarily gracefully], there will be few of these opportunities.

Jack Hauck has done a great job of kicking off this dialogue and reading the comments of Mike Harrington and Jerry Maloney have brought back memories of Niagara, Hamilton, New Balt and Washington. Greetings to the three of you.

Long may this dialogue continue!

I have the great good fortune to live a few miles from Jack's home. I can attest to the day by day authenticity of the outstanding family life and professional accomplishments and ministries that his words above convey.
It was a great good fortune of mine to be one year behind Jack in the program that turned friars into priests. He was outstanding then and still is. We try to connect at least once a month and have exchanged favors and courtesies. I live in a house that is 200 years old and left behind by the last of the Shakers to leave their American first foundation some years ago. Jack Houck' spirit is like a Shaker building: rock solid and enduring. He was a good friend and influence way back when and remains so today. Ad multos annos in corde Carmeli. JPM
