From The Editor: Going Global

“Their report goes forth through all the earth, their
message, to the ends of the world.” –Psalm 19:5

The Carmelite Review is the newsletter for the Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (Chicago Province). This is increasingly becoming a global task, though. Besides events in the United States and Canada, there are articles in this issue involving Carmelites from El Salvador, Kenya, Vietnam, Iraq, Peru and Mexico. There has been no concerted effort in the Province to “go global;” instead, as globalization becomes all the buzz in the business world and the political world, it’s becoming inadvertently all the buzz in the Province. Just by reporting the news in the Province, this issue has become an international issue.

For example, as the accompanying photo of the student community at Whitefriars Hall, the Carmelite Formation House in Washington, DC, shows, we are a global Province. There are too many to list all the names (sorry, guys!) but pictured are men from the United States, Vietnam, and Mexico. Now add the students doing advanced studies at Whitefriars Hall, and Kenya, England, India, and Indonesia are added to the list. Note, the dog just sits in the classes and doesn’t count in the list. Thérèse Martin, an unassuming young nun at the Carmel in Lisieux, wanted to go to Vietnam. Maybe to “go global” is innate in the Carmelite spirit.
