The Reverend Frances (Florian) McCarthy, O.Carm., died in West
Palm Beach, FL, on Friday, January 7, 2005, where he was living
in retirement.
Fr. Florian McCarthy was born in Cambridge, MA, on
September 22, 1925. He was the son of Edward Florence and
Josephine (Galvin) McCarthy-Nadau and stepson of John Nadau.
His family consisted of his brothers Edward, Robert, and
Leonard and sister Theresa.
Visitation for Fr. Florian McCarhty, O,Carm., was held in
Sudbury, MA, on Thursday, January 13. The Mass of Christian
Burial was held Friday, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, in
Sudbury. Rev. John Welch, O.Carm., Eastern Commissary
Provincial was principal homilist. Interment immediately
followed at New Town Cemetery, there.
Frances attended Phoenix
Lawrence Grammar School, North
Junior High School and St. Mary Parish
High School in Waltham, MA, before
enrolling at Mt. Carmel Junior Seminary
in Niagara Falls, Ont. to study for
the priesthood in the Carmelite Order.
On June 9, 1951, Fr. Florian McCarthy,
O.Carm., was ordained to the priesthood
at Our Lady of the Scapular
Church in New York.
Fr. Florian’s life was dedicated to education. He taught
at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, IL; Salpointe High
School in Toucan, AZ, and Joliet Catholic High School in
Joliet, IL. In 1961, Fr. Florian embarked on an eleven year
adventure to Lima, Peru. There he opened and directed
Colegio Nuestra Senora del Carmen, a Carmelite experimental
bilingual high school. After receiving his PhD in 1976, Fr.
McCarthy returned to Salpointe High School in Tucson, AZ
where he then served as principal.
In 1986 after his sabbatical in Madrid, Fr. Francis
(Florian) McCarthy became associate pastor at St. Agnes
Catholic Church in Phoenix, AZ. In 1989 he worked at our
Lady of Lourdes High School and Sacred Heart Parish in
Nogales, before retiring in 1999 and moving to Florida.
