Our Man at the Smithsonian

Reverend David Blanchard, O.Carm., has a book on display at the newly opened National Museum of the American Indian. This book, first published in 1980, is based on Father David’s life and work among the Mohawk in southern Quebec.

In the introduction to this book, Father David writes, “Seven Generations: A History of the Kanienkehaka does contain, when possible, the Mohawk point of view of history. The words and thoughts of many Mohawk teachers and traditional leaders have been recorded throughout history. I have included much of this information in an attempt to provide that Mohawk point of view to the teacher. In a way, this book is their work too, and I have been their editor. I hope that I have done them justice.”

The National Museum of the American Indian is part of the Smithsonian Institution and is located just south of the U.S. Capitol next to the National Air and Space Museum on Independence Avenue in Washington, DC.

Father David is currently working in the country of El Salvador. An article detailing his current work and ministry there at the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes appeared in the previous issue of the Carmelite Review: http://www.carmelitereview.org/issues/v43n2/offering-worship-work.php
