Recently Departed Carmelite Priests and Brothers (continued)

The Reverend Phillip Nessinger, O.Carm., died in Lemont, IL on Monday, December 13, 2004, at the age of 80.

Philip was born on June 24, 1924 to Henry and Margaret (Freund) Nessinger. The family consisted of his sisters, Margaret, Loretta and Marie and brother Henry.

Visitation was held on Thursday, December 16, at the National Shrine of St. Therese, in Darien, IL, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial that evening. Burial took place on Friday, December 17, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Chicago.

A native of Chicago, Philip was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School before he entered the Carmelite Order in 1944. He was ordained a priest in Washington, D.C., on June 6, 1950.

His ministry to the church is marked by service to several parishes. Fr. Philip was assigned to St. Cyril’s in Chicago, IL; Mt. Carmel in Houston, TX; St. Cecilia’s in Englewood, NJ; St. John’s in Mississauga, Ont; Mt. Carmel in Fairfield, CA; St. Paul the Apostle in Gurnee, IL; and St. Matthew’s in Glendale Heights, IL. He also served at St. Gregory’s parish in the Archdiocese of Toronto, Ont.

In 2000 Fr. Philip retired to Carmelite Carefree Village in Darien, IL. In 2002 he moved to Mother Theresa Home in Lemont, IL, where he was at the time of his death.
