Cover Photograph: This statue in front of the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was almost completely submerged during the flooding of New Orleans. The lines on the statue and base show the slow draining of the city. The orange spray-painted “X” behind the statue appears on almost every building in New Orleans. This shows that the building had been searched by a rescue squad. The markings state the date of the search, how many bodies were discovered, and how many people and pets were still inside.
