On Monday, June 12th, three novices professed their simple vows, (a promise of membership for the next three years) in the chapel of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, New York. Mark Zittle, O.Carm., Joseph Phuong Van Ngo, O.Carm., and John Baptist Hung Tien Ho, O.Carm., completed their novitiate year and became professed members of the Province of Saint Elias.
The profession took place at Mass presided over by the Very Reverend Michael Kissane, O.Carm., Prior Provincial of the Saint Elias Province. The Very Reverend John Welch, O.Carm., Prior Provincial of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, was the homilist. Carmelites, family and friends of the newly professed attended the celebration, and a luncheon was held in Pilgrim Hall immediately afterwards.
Mark Zittle is 40 years old and a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is a graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University and worked in sales and management for several years after completing his education. Feeling the desire to manifest faith in the Gospel values through service to the poor he combined his employment with participation in active ministry. Initially, he worked for Food for the Poor, a Christian relief and development organization based in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The last position he held before joining the Carmelites was the Director of Outreach Preachers at Cross International Catholic Outreach, which delivers aid through the Church in the Caribbean, Africa, South America, and Asia. Mark will live at Whitefriars Hall and study theology at the Washington Theological Union for a year before doing his internship.
