Newly made friends gather with Anthony Escobar (second from left)

Hi, I am Anthony Escobar and I am a senior at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California. This past summer I had an awesome experience that I want to share with you. I had the opportunity to attend Colegio Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Lima, Peru. This is a Carmelite school in Peru. I attended this school for four weeks and was there as an exchange student. Yes it was more school, but it was totally worth it.

Besides being a great and awesome experience, I got to practice my Spanish with the new friends that I made. I also got to learn about the culture and lifestyle in Lima. I made huge amounts of friends when I was there and I still keep in touch with them. I also have kept in touch with one student from Arizona. I participated in all of their activities, took some notes in class, and even worked on a video project for literature class. This video was on one of Shakespeare’s books. And I actually started to get a better understanding of physics. This is all possible because they are in school during our summer, and we are in school in their summer. Something that I found cool was that their Christmas takes place during their summer.

I was not the only exchange student there. There were three other students from Salpointe High School, a Carmelite high school in Tucson, Arizona.

I thank Father Paul Henson, O.Carm., principal of Crespi and Father Tom Schrader, O.Carm., Crespi High president for all of their help in giving me the opportunity to attend school in Peru. I also thank Father Raul Maravi, O.Carm., President of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and Brother Miguel Bacigalupo, O.Carm., for their friendship and for arranging my stay with a student in my class. This student’s name is Manoel Assis. He and his family were very hospitable and treated me like a member of their family. This made me feel very comfortable. Being at ease is what I found the whole experience to be about.

I can’t really explain with words how great and amazing this experience was for me. I felt like I could relate to them 100%. Anything that I did was completely cool for them and vice-versa. On top of all of this, I am honored by not just being a part of the Crespi Community but also a part of a larger family, the Carmelites. All of this was an unforgettable experience for me, one that I will cherish forever. If I could experience this all over again, I would in a heartbeat.
