The Peruvian Carmelites held their annual meeting at the retreat house, Villa Carmelitas, in Lurin, Peru, from January 8-12, 2007. The Very Reverend John Welch, O.Carm., Prior Provincial and Reverend Jim Boyce, O.Carm, Eastern Commissariat were in attendance.

On January 7th, three novices completed their novitiate year. In the presence of many visiting Carmelites including the provincial and those from our province in Sicuani, Peru, the novices celebrated the profession of Simple Vows on Friday, January 12th. Father John Welch, O.Carm., received the Simple Vows of Amador Alipio Garcia, Floristan Guerrero, and Benjamin Salas. All three are Peruvians.

In the same ceremony three new novices were officially received into the novitiate. We welcome Alejandro Muro and Luis Jesus Paz, both from Mexico and Alfredo Guillen from El Salvador. They join two Venezuelan novices, Denys Manrique and Alexander Smith, who are half-way through their novitiate year. The novitiate house at Villa Carmelitas is now definitely international in character.

The vows were received at a Mass where nearly 200 were in attendance as many family members of the newly professed came to witness the ceremony. They came from as far way as Cajamarca in the north of Peru, the home of Amador Alipio and Floristan as well as from Lima, home for Benjamin. Many Lay Carmelites and Religious from the Conference of Religious (where the novices spent their year in training) came as well along with many parishioners and friends from Cieneguilla and Jose Galvez, (where the novices had completed some limited apostolic work). The day ended with a Peruvian feast luncheon for all in attendance.
