Friars of the Carmelite Order of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province assembled by region to pray, plan, and share their friendships. This year, the three regions, Eastern, Midwest and Western prepared four days of interest and fellowship for the men of their commissariat. These meetings are conducted every three years, the year prior to their Provincial Chapter.
The Eastern Regional men met in Washington, DC, from May 21-24, 2007, at the Washington Theological Union. Father James Boyce, O.Carm., Eastern Regional Commissary Provincial (i.e., Regional Superior), set the stage for the event. From opening prayers that included beautiful piano recitals played by him in the Union’s magnificent chapel, to a bus trip to visit several of the memorials in Washington, Father James provided both a joyful and interesting stay.
The Western Regional meeting was held in San Diego, California, from June 4-7, 2007, at the Handlery Hotel. Father Al Koppes, O.Carm., the Western Commissary Provincial, was assisted by Father John Knoernschild, O.Carm., in making the preparations for the men who came to San Diego. The weather being always so temperate provided the backdrop for evenings of sightseeing and pleasurable dinners.

The Midwest Regional meeting was conducted June 6-9, 2007, in Darien, Illinois, at the Carmelite Spiritual Center. Father David Simpson, O.Carm., the Midwest Commissary Provincial, was their host. The meetings were well-attended and full of energy. The campus in Darien in June was a gorgeous backdrop for the meetings and the city of Chicago has a proud skyline filled with activities.
A highlight of the meetings was a presentation on the 800th anniversary of the Carmelite Rule by Father Craig Morrison, O.Carm. Father Craig, a noted theologian, is currently Professor at the Biblical Institute in Rome.

Ease on Down the Road was the theme of a presentation by Father Myron Judy, O.Carm. His report on a survey by the men on housing considerations for retirement was met with favor.
Besides the presentations, the meetings were also a chance for each member to share about what is happening in their neck of the woods, so to speak. Wonderful ministry is taking place across the Province. This is also the place where items pertaining to the Order and Province are discussed. The days were mixed with comradery, wonderful meals, social events, prayer, laughter and Eucharist. With the final day’s work concluded, the men left refreshed and ready to continue their service to their respective communities.
