Father Jerome Robert Callahan, O.Carm.

With deep sadness the Order of Carmelites of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province reports the loss of Reverend Jerome Robert Callahan O.Carm., who died at the age of 80 on April 25, 2007, in Venice, Florida.

Father Jerome laid in state at Saint Thomas More Church in Sarasota, Florida, on April 30, 2007. A Mass of Christian Burial took place at Saint Thomas following the visitation. The Very Reverend John Welch, O.Carm., Prior Provincial of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province, was the presider. Internment took place at Venice Memorial Gardens in Venice, Florida.

Jerome Callahan was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of the (late) Daniel, and (late) Sarah (O’Brien) Callahan on January 30, 1927. Jerome was enrolled in Holy Rosary grade school there. Graduating he entered the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 1945 he entered the Carmelite Novitiate in New Baltimore, Pennsylvania, where he made first profession of vows on August 15, 1946. Continuing his studies at Mount Carmel College in Niagara, he earned his BA degree in Philosophy in 1951. Jerome made his solemn profession on August 15, 1949, in Washington, DC. He was ordained a priest June 4, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois.

After his ordination, Father Callahan received a MA degree in Modern European History and Education from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. He also attended the United States International University in San Diego, California.

As a newly ordained, Father Callahan began his career as a teacher at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, Illinois, in 1953. After one year he moved to Saint Clara Parish also in Chicago where for the next four years he served as the assistant director of the Society of the Little Flower. In 1957, Father Callahan joined the teaching staff at DeSales High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He also served briefly at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona. In 1959, Father Jerome returned to his home city of Pittsburgh, where he became the local director of the Society of the Little Flower. In 1966 after serving as director for seven years he returned to his teaching career serving at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California. After a one year sabbatical Father Callahan moved into parish work and became the assistant pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Tenafly, New Jersey. After five years there, Father Jerome became pastor of Saint Joan of Arc Church in Yorktown, Virginia.

In 1981 Father Jerome moved to Houston, Texas, and for the next nine years served as associate pastor of Saint Albert’s Parish there. While at Saint Albert’s he also took on the role of Chaplain at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Houston. In 1988, Father Callahan was assigned to Saint Patrick’s Parish, Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he served as Parochial Vicar for the next year before retiring to Ashton Gardens in Venice, Florida. In 1990 Father Jerome came out of retirement and served again in pastoral work at Saint Thomas More Church in Sarasota, Florida. He served there, for the next six years. During that time Father Callahan celebrated his golden jubilee of ordination in June of 2002. In 2006 Father Jerome for the second time went into retirement, this time to Manor Care in Venice, Florida, where he lived until his death.

Father John Fogarty, O.Carm.

Father John Columba Fogarty, O.Carm., of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Carmelite Province died at the age of 82 on Friday, March 9, 2007, in Venice, Florida.

Memorial services were held on March 20, 2007, at the Carmelite Chapel in Nokomis, Florida; March 22, 2007 at Saint Albert’s Church in Houston, Texas, and March 29, 2007 at the National Shrine of Saint Therese in Darien, Illinois.

On Saturday, March 24, 2007, a Mass of Christian Burial was held at the Carmelite Convent of Discalced Nuns, in Danvers, Massachusetts. The internment of his ashes followed at Saint Father John Fogarty, O.Carm. Mary’s Cemetery in Salem, and at his family’s plot in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

John Fogarty was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of the late John Joseph and Catherine Mary (Dempsey) Fogarty on February 15, 1925.

A graduate of Mount Carmel College, Niagara Falls, Ontario, he was ordained a priest on June 6, 1950. He also earned a MA degree in English from Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, and a Doctorate in Ministry from University of Saint Mary Seminary, Baltimore, Maryland.

Devoting his early career to teaching he served at Mount Carmel High School, Chicago, Illinois, the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton, Massachusetts, and Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California. Moving into campus ministry, Father John became a Campus minister in San Diego, California and later Romeoville, Illinois.

Turning his attention to pastoral work, Father Fogarty served at the then Saint Mary’s Church in Joliet, Illinois and Saint Albert’s in Houston, Texas.

In 1999 he moved to Carmel in Mission Valley in Nokomis, Florida. On August 15, 2004, Father John Fogarty, O.Carm., celebrated his sixty year jubilee of vows with the Carmelite Order. In 2005 Father John moved to Sunset Lake Village in Venice, Florida, where he lived until his death.
