“Come to the Water and Be Refreshed”

Come to the Water and be Refreshed, was the theme for the 2008 Chapter of Carmelites of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province, held June 16-20, 2008, in Darien, Illinois. The triennial meeting is a calling of the Province to come together to elect leaders who will serve its members with the Carmelite charism through their dedication.

We have begun the month of June, the start of the six months of the hurricane season. This is the half of the year when we pray to Our Lady of Prompt Succor, whom the Ursuline sisters prayed to during the battle of New Orleans to save the city from the British. When Katrina was coming, we prayed.

For on the morning of July 19, 2008, Hasely King, O.Carm., a member of the Saint Elias (NY) Province and a native son of this wonderfully beautiful island country, was ordained to the priesthood at Saint Michael’s Church in Maracas Valley, Trinidad.

An Appetizer Course with the Carmelite Forum

Carmel: A School for Desire was the title of this year’s 19th annual Summer Seminar on Carmelite Spirituality presented by the Carmelite Forum. More than 150 participants came together at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. They came from New Orleans, Louisiana; from Annville, Pennsylvania and from Pepper Pike, Ohio. Others made the journey from Toronto, Ontario, Canada; from Bronx, New York; Ventura, California; Dallas, Texas; West Palm Beach, Florida; and everywhere in between.

The Lickteig Chalices: Separated at Birth, Rejoined at Last

Back in the mid-1800s, I had a great, great uncle, Henry Ruckers, who had emigrated from Germany to Kansas, but when he heard about the gold strikes in California he joined the throngs heading out West to strike it rich as ‘forty-niners.’ And that he did, returning to Kansas rather wealthy. There he started buying up Kansas farmland around Scipio, Kansas, eventually amassing thousands of acres.
