By Sal Lema Possessing the “Tenacity of God’s Love,” is what Father Tony Mazurkiewicz, O.Carm., described when referring to his journey to be a Carmelite priest. All of us who had the privilege of celebrating Father Tony’s ordination agree that he has held firmly to God’s zeal for him and we are very grateful that he has. Red was the liturgical color of the day on May 30th for the Vigil of Pentecost at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church in the Hyde Park area of Chicago. And it was doing double-duty, symbolic of the tongues of fire bestowed on the Apostles, and symbolic of the Spirit’s call to Tony Mazurkiewicz, O.Carm., to the priesthood. It was everywhere—on the chasuble of the ordaining bishop, the Very Reverend Michael LaFay, O.Carm., the bishop of Sicuani, Peru, and a member of the Province, on the stoles of the thirty concelebrating priests, and throughout the décor of the church. A Blue Island, Illinois, native, Father Tony is the son of Lawrence and Laura Lee Mazurkiewicz. Tony grew up in this south Chicago suburb. He attended Mount Carmel High School Chicago from 1988 and graduated in 1992. From there he enrolled at Yale University and received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1996. In 2000, Tony enrolled at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago majoring in history/ philosophy. After one year there Tony pursued his interest to serve and joined the Carmelites. He made his First Profession of Vows to the Order on June 16, 2003, at the Carmelite novitiate in Middletown, New York. He then served as an intern (a time during formation with a full-time ministry in a Carmelite placement) first teaching religion at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California, and then serving at the Parish of Saint Agnes in Phoenix, Arizona.
