By Father Gerard J. Power, O.Carm. Over the past year, in conjunction with Saint Catherine Diocese 50th Anniversary, Saint Patrick Parish in Niagara Falls, Canada, held many celebrations to commemorate 150 years as a parish community. Shortly after New Years Day, an eighty square-foot banner was unfurled on the front of the church to begin the celebrations, and to remind everyone that the parish has been serving the people of Niagara for 150 years! The banner was designed by the pastor, Father Gerard Power, O.Carm., with the assistance of Artista Design and Print in Niagara Falls. In June, the Niagara Shopping News published an Anniversary Magazine for the parish. Some 33,000 copies went out across Niagara. It was a wonderful celebration of the parish, past and present. Several thousand copies were given to the parish for distribution. On Sunday, July 6th, the parish had a Family Picnic and Fun Day on the school playground. Over 600 parishioners came out to celebrate. It was the hottest day of the summer, but it did not keep the old and young alike from enjoying the many festivities, including inflatable houses, games for the kids and adults, a free barbecue, face-painting, trivia contests and magicians. It was a superb celebration that many would like to see happen on an annual basis.
