By Sal Lema Traveling with spiritual director, Father Bob Colaresi, O.Carm., director of the Society of the Little Flower and Egyptologist, Soha I Sabbour, I experienced a twelve-day pilgrimage to the land of pharaohs and kings. I made the journey of Jesus, Mary and Joseph with 17 other eager pilgrims. Together, we followed the advent of the Holy Family to Egypt, an event of the utmost significance in Egypt’s long history. Moved by the spirit of prophecy, Hosea foresaw the flight from Bethlehem, when he uttered God’s words: “Out of Egypt have I called my Son.” (Hosea 11:1) The itinerary of the trip included visiting seven areas in Egypt: Cairo, Abu Simbel, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Luxor, Sharm-El-Sheikh, and Sinai. Our group would travel the 14,000 mile journey by plane, train, bus, horse drawn carriage and camel. Our accommodations varied between five-star hotels whose chefs were among the masters of Cairo, to rustic establishments hiding solitarily in the wilderness. We feasted on sea bass, veal and chicken, rice and vegetables, the general main dishes of the Egyptian people. We enjoyed hot bread made fresh each day and baked over a hot fire. Even though the foods were a delight, the main reason for our visit was to relive the Holy Family’s visit, to see the great Pyramids in Giza, the burial tombs and other artifacts that are so much a part of this ancient culture. The mystery of Egypt lay in front of us to explore and appreciate. After landing in Cairo, our first city in Egypt, we visited the Egyptian Museum. This visit would alone have taken several days to view all of its treasures. Our half-day experience barely touched the 100,000 objects that covered the 5,000 years of ancient Egyptian civilization.
