Congratulations to our recent graduates of Washington Theological Union. From left: To ny Mazurkiewicz, O.Carm., class valedictorian, receiving a master’s degree in Divinity and a certificate in Carmelite Studies; Peter Hoang Nguyen, O.Carm., of the Saint Elias (NY) Province also receiving a master’s in Divinity and a certificate in Carmelite studies; Jacob Mendez, O.Carm. (India); Marlon Mateo, O.Carm., and Shaji Kuzhinjalil, O.Carm. (India), all receiving certificates in Carmelite Studies. Father Brice Riordan, O.Carm., celebrated both his 90th birthday and 65th anniversary of ordination at ‘Carmel Retreat,’ the retreat house he founded in Mahwah, New Jersey, in 1954. Shown here with Father Brice are his friends (and party organizers) Liz Higgins (to his right) and Mary Coleman (to his left). In 2008 St. Anastasia’s undertook a major renovation of the church. Among the many changes was the relocation and upgrading of the organ. The organ, which was previously in the choir loft was moved downstairs into the archway where the original altar was. The organ was renovated and enlarged at the cost of $150,000. The students at Casa del Carmen, the Carmelite House of Formation in Mexico City, are masking their way through this outbreak of H1N1. Precautions were taken when one pre-novice came down with the flu, but all are currently healthy as of this writing. Brother Thomas Murphy and Father Gregory Houck (far left and right) led the novitiate entry retreat, June 1-5, at Carmel Retreat in Mahwah, New Jersey. The novices are Dominic Hung Duc Nguyen and Edgar Ivan Varela (front), Paul Hung Van Tran (center), Joseph Vinh Quang Nguyen, Francis Xavier Khoa Van Nguyen and John David Howell (back row). On May 15, 2009, participants gathered by the Captain on the Helm Statue and M/V KANAN near Chicago’s Navy Pier for the annual blessing of the fleet ceremony. Again this year the presider was our very own “Captain Kevin” Father Kevin McBrien, O.Carm., who provided both prayer and blessing of the ceremonial wreath.
