1984 he became Director of Carmelite Carefree Village in Darien, Illinois, where he was instrumental in building their Chapel. In 1986 Father Franklin was named Pastor of Saint Matthew Parish in Glendale Heights, Illinois. In 1989, Father Franklin retired to Carmel at Mission Valley in Nokomis, Florida. During his retirement he oversaw the construction of the Carmelite Retirement House at Carmel at Mission Valley in Nokomis. He remained in Nokomis until his death. May he rest in peace. He was re-appointed as Provincial Councilor from 1993-1996. In 1996 Father Leo was elected Prior Provincial for two consecutive three-year terms. Leaving the office and provincial administration in 2002, Father McCarthy became Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Osprey Florida. He held that position for three years, after which he became Pastor of the same parish for the following two years. In 2008 Father Leo retired to the Carmelite house in Venice, Florida. During his retirement in Venice, he was named Commissary Provincial for the Eastern Commissariat of the Province, a position he held for one year. In 2009 Father Leo McCarthy retired to the Carmelite Retirement House at Mission Valley in Nokomis, Florida. He was subsequently transferred to a hospice care facility in Sarasota, Florida, where he remained until his death. May he rest in peace. The Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, Order of Carmelites, mourns the death of the Reverend Joel Moelter, O.Carm., who died at the age of 83 on November 23, 2009, in Santa Rosa, California. A Memorial Mass for Father Moelter was held on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Mary Star of the Sea Church in Gualala, California. A Memorial Mass was also held on Thursday, December 10, 2009, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Fairfield, California. Internment took place at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at the Carmelite plot in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. Joseph Moelter was born to (the late) Leo Joseph Moelter and (the late) Anna Frances (Lyons) Moelter on July 22, 1926, in Los Angeles, California. He is survived by his brother John. Joseph attended Saint John the Evangelist School and Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, California. After his high school graduation in 1944, he entered the Carmelite novitiate in Middletown, New York. On September 8, 1945, Joseph professed simple vows, taking the religious name “Joel.” He then studied Philosophy at Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario. On August 15, 1948, Joel made his solemn profession with the Carmelites, and afterwards went to Rome for theological studies at the Collegio Internazionale di Sant’ Alberto. While in Rome, on July 8, 1951, he was ordained a priest. Besides degrees in Philosophy and Theology, Father Joel also received an M.A. in Education from Loyola University in Los Angeles. Father Joel began his ministry in 1952 at Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, California, where he served as a teacher. In 1956, he became Master of Students at Mount Carmel High School in Auburn, New York. In 1958 he returned to Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, Carmelite Review where he was Vice Principal for 8 years. While in Los Angeles, Father Joel had the opportunity to minister to the large African-American population there, defending their civil rights, participating in marches, teaching aspects of African-American history not found in textbooks, and finding college scholarships for African-American students. In 1966, Father Joel taught at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona, for two years. From 1969 to 1971, he was a member of the novitiate team at Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He then taught at Mount Carmel Junior Seminary in the same college from 1972 to 1978. In 1979 he was named Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Fairfield, California; and in 1988, he became Administrator of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Joliet, Illinois, where he served for 6 years. It was while serving at the largely Hispanic parish in Joliet that Father Joel came in contact with Mexican culture. He then went to serve as Parochial Vicar of Transfiguration Parish, and as chaplain of the local prison, in Torreon, Coahuila, in Mexico, one of four Carmelites who went there at the invitation of the local bishop. While in Torreon, Father Joel celebrated his 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. In 2005, he moved to the Carmelite house at Casa del Carmen in Tlalpan, Mexico City. During his priestly ministry, Father Joel was also involved in ecumenical work in the United States, Mexico and Canada. He was also an accomplished water color artist whose work was exhibited in several juried art shows. Father Joel spent the last few years at an assisted living facility in Santa Rosa, California, where he remained until his death. May he rest in peace.
